Over the past four or five years, Brooke Hogan has gone from the daughter of a very famous person to a very famous person herself thanks to reality television and her burgeoning music career. With that fame has come lots of attention, which means lots of eyes on her family’s split, her private life and every other facet of her life. As Brooke preps for the release of her second album ‘The Redemption’ this July, she was kind enough to chat with PopEater about her drama-filled personal life, her penchant for bikinis (and possibly Playboy eventually), her feelings about Perez Hilton and more.

So tell me about the overall vibe of The Redemption and what you were trying to accomplish with it.

“I was really inspired by an album I used to listen to when I was younger, and it was Pink’s ‘Missundaztood’ album. I always related to her because she was talking about her family problems and stuff like that, so I really connected to her music. So I tried to model my album around that, just more my style. I’m trained in R&B vocally and I love listening to pop and stuff. So it’s a mix of pop and R&B and a touch of rock here and there. Lyrically, I just talk about everything I’ve gone through this past year. Between love and family and people that have stabbed me in the back … so many things, this has been such an up-and-down year. It was great for album material (laughs).”

Do you think the fact that people see your life on ‘Brooke Knows Best’ makes it easier for you to open up in your songs?

“It makes it easier, but the nice thing about it is people only see one percent of my life and personality on the show. This will actually let them see that I have guts and I have a heart and I’m not just a Tin Man. People never get the full story and unless it comes from the horse’s head, they don’t know at all. It stinks because everybody’s like ‘you’re so funny on the show, you’re so crazy’ … they’re living a couple months back when we filmed it, and life changes so quickly. I do so many other things in my life and have so many other facets of my personality that people only know Brooke Hogan as the dumb blonde who does dumb things and has to have daddy save her all the time.”

Are you able to use that dumb blonde stereotype to your advantage?

“Honestly, I was just talking to my friend about this. Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton … all these girls pretend they’re so dumb. They’re businesswomen and it’s all just a character. It makes people like them. It’s funny, because every girl has that dumb blond personality in them, but behind the scenes we’re doing business and signing contracts and talking to lawyers. When the cameras are on, we like to have fun and it’s us being goofy, then once they go away there’s business we have to buckle down on.”

How much of the music do you write?

“I wrote I would say 98 percent of the album. I had a little help with a couple songs, but I made sure I did most of it. It was so personal to me, and we’ll see if I’m a good writer or not.”

Do you care about what critics say?

“I love to hear people talk about what I’m doing. Any press is good press, and any critiquing is good critiquing. I love to hear people’s opinions, that way it’s constructive even if it comes in a sarcastic form.”

Even the heavy-handed bloggers who aren’t so gentle?

“Everybody’s gotta feed their kids and pay their rent, so if people figured out that’s the way to do it by talking crap about other people, let them do their thing. We all know why they’re doing it. I’m sure Perez Hilton gets sick of going on the Internet every single day and doing it, you know?”

I thought you had a good relationship with him. You did a video interview with him for his site.

“We never really had a relationship other than me reading the mean things he’d write about me. I always thought it was funny and never really took it personally and I did an interview with him and he was very sweet and kind, and that’s all I have to say about that.”

And you seem to be working in some of your personal life into the album now. Has your mother heard the song about her?

“I don’t know if she has or not. We played it on ‘Bubba the Love Sponge’ and I played it and I don’t know if she heard it or not. I think she was listening though. I hope she can only take good things out of it. It’s how I feel and hopefully it will help her see where I’m coming from because talking doesn’t help. So maybe singing is a good way of communicating.”

Your video for Falling shows a good deal of skin, with you in a bikini for pretty much the whole thing. How do you balance taste with sex appeal, and is there a lot of pressure to be racy?

“I like being more clothed, but for some reason, everybody wants to put me in a bikini. Every photographer, every director. I’m like, ‘Why?’ I don’t look like Claudia Schiffer. I’ve been born and raised on the beach, so I don’t really see being in a bikini as sexy or sex appeal. I just relate it to sand and ocean and not Playboy. To me, sexy is more attitude and confidence and stuff.”

So would something like Jennifer Aniston’s GQ cover or Playboy be entirely out of the question?

“Everything is possible. I don’t know how I’m going to feel when I’m 30 or 40. I might need a little ego boost, so I’m always open to it.”

It seems like splits/divorce and reality television are synonymous these days. This week Jon and Kate Gosselin split. Do you think there’s any added weight on a relationship that comes with being on a reality show?

“The cameras don’t really make you get a divorce, they just make you hold in what you’re really feeling. You can’t air your shorts out when you walk in the door from work, so I think it just adds a little tension. I think the problems lie beneath.”

We had a great interview with your dad a few months ago and he said he was approached for a Rock of Love type show but turned it down. Is that something you’d ever consider?

“No! The last thing I need is guys puking in my house and drinking all my booze and kissing every single person in the house. That’s herpes waiting to happen. Reality dating seems cheesebally and like a charity case. I don’t think I’d go there.”

True Blood’s Stephen Moyer calls Robert Pattinson ‘the Diet Coke of Vampires’

It looks like poor little Robert Pattinson got torn limb from limb by either A) An angry mob of Twihards pissed that he’s cheating on Bella with that Lost sk*nk or B) True Blood’s Stephen Moyer, who just called Pattz a “p-ssy” in next month’s Marie Claire. Actually, Pattz’s bloody photos are fake - I mean, the blood is fake, it’s all for the movie he’s doing, Remember Me.

True Blood’s blood-suckiest vampire Stephen Moyer is Marie Claire’s “2-Minute Date”, which is kind of a cute way to profile a celebrity. Moyer plays Bill Compton “the ruggedly handsome 173-year-old Southern vampire”. And when Moyer does call Pattz a p-ssy, I think he’s talking about the character of Edward, not really Pattz. Well… I don’t know. It could be either/or. Here are the best little snippets of the Marie Claire piece:

Bill’s very gentlemanly, asking ‘May I visit with you at your home?’ It’s a sentimental, old-world kind of courting,” explains Moyer.

[However]… all that gallant wooing is underscored by a twisted sexuality.

“It’s about being courted by somebody who could rip your arteries out,” Moyer says.

On kissing on-and-off screen love Anna Paquin: “I keep my mouth open and let her probe around the sharpness of the [fangs]… which is quite erotic.”

As for the competition, Twilight’s toothsome Robert Pattinson, Moyer simply says: “He’s a p-ssy! He’s the slim-Fast, Diet Coke of vampires.”

[From Oh no, Vampire Throwdown! I would love to see Moyer (who I think is hot) throw down with Pattz (who I think is lovely, but rarely sexy). Pattz does seem sort of p-ssy-esque, but you what? Not every guy has to be some ultra-macho dude. And I definitely don’t like the way Moyer disrespected my Diet Coke. What does that make Moyer? The “Coke Classic” of vampires? Puh-lease.

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, Is Dead

Michael Jackson, the charismatic musician who came to be known as The “King of Pop,’ has died at the age of 50.

“At about 13:00 hours today, Mr. Jackson was transported from this location by paramedics to UCLA Medical Center. At about 2:30 in the afternoon, Mr. Jackson was pronounced. Currently the L.A. County Coroner’s office has taken possession of Mr. Jackson’s body, and they will handle any other inquiries into the type of death or anything that relates to that at the time,” a Los Angeles Police Department officer said during a brief press conference.

TMZ was the first to report the news. According to reports, the pop legend suffered a cardiac arrest this afternoon and medics were unable to revive him. A TMZ source said Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived, while the Times says he was in a deep coma upon arrival.

The 50-year-old singer was picked up this afternoon at his rented home in Bel Air around 12:26 p.m. where medics had to administer CPR before transporting him to UCLA hospital.

Capt. Steve Ruda of the Los Angeles Fire Dept. told the LA Times that Jackson was not breathing when help arrived at the house, which is about a two minute drive from the hospital.

Earlier, a Jackson family member told TMZ Michael is in “really bad shape.” Joseph Jackson, the patriarch of the musical clan, also told media outlets his son was “not doing well.”

A report in Britain’s The Sun newspaper, citing a UCLA Medical Center source, claims that Jackson received an injection of Demerol — a drug similar to morphine — shortly before the incident and began breathing very shallow shortly after.

The ‘Thriller’ superstar has long been addled by health problems and has had addictions to painkillers in the past.

Jackson had three children, Michael Jr., Paris and Prince.

This year, Jackson mounted an effort to revive his career after several setbacks in the past decade. He announced he would perform 50 concerts at London’s O2 Arena. Those sold out concerts were set to begin on July 13.

Jackson had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the London shows.

His 1982 album “Thriller” - which included the blockbuster hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” - is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The public first knew him in the late 1960s, when as a boy he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the music group he formed with his four older brothers. Among their No. 1 hits were “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I’ll Be There.”

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

“For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don’t have the words,” said Quincy Jones, who produced “Thriller.” “He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.”

Talking exclusively with Spinner.com, Smokey Robinson reflected on the loss, saying “it’s always hard to lose a friend.”

Phil Spector Sentenced 19 Years in Prison For Killing Lana Clarkson

Music producer Phil Spector has been sentenced to 19 years to life in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.

A Los Angeles judge sentenced Spector on Friday to 15 years to life for second-degree murder and four years for personal use of a gun. The judge is also ordering restitution payments.

A jury convicted the 69-year-old Spector in the fatal shooting of Clarkson at his home in 2003.

Spector plans an appeal.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Six years ago, Phil Spector was barely a blip on the American celebrity radar screen. Although his music lived on, his name and face were only dimly recalled by rock music aficionados until a shooting at his Alhambra mansion propelled him to notoriety.

Now he faces sentencing Friday on second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson, a conviction that suggests to some that California prosecutors have broken a decades-long string of celebrity murder case losses. The names O.J. Simpson and Robert Blake come to mind.

But Spector is in a class of his own. He was not a performer, not a sports star with a following or a singer who captivated the public. He was a music producer, a behind-the-scenes guy whose ideas changed the sound of rock music. He invented the “Wall of Sound,” a revolutionary recording technique. And he was known for bizarre behavior. Famous, yes. A celebrity? Not in today’s pop culture.

Spector is a frail and ailing 69-year-old for whom the mandated minimum sentence of 15 years would likely be a life sentence. His lawyer says he is enduring jail by focusing on his plans to appeal.

“He’s doing fairly well,” said Doron Weinberg. “He’s adjusting to the circumstances and settling down to wait out an appeal with high hopes. He feels he will win the appeal.”

Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler has little leeway in sentencing. The 15-years-to-life sentence is mandated by law. Fidler’s only decision is whether to add three or four years for personal use of a gun. The prosecution has asked for four and the defense has said three years is appropriate.

Spector had two trials with essentially the same evidence. His first in 2007 was televised gavel to gavel and spectators flocked to the courtroom. But when the jury deadlocked after a five-month trial, his legal “dream team,” which at times numbered half a dozen lawyers, bailed out.

By the time the second trial started in 2008, interest had waned. The judge ordered cameras turned off and only a handful of spectators and reporters stopped in sporadically to watch testimony.

The retrial lasted the same length of time as the first trial, but there was only one defense lawyer: Weinberg, a well-regarded veteran from San Francisco. A young woman prosecutor, Truc Do, was brought in to work with Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson. Most importantly, there was a new jury. The forewoman wept after the guilty verdict but gave no hint of what tipped the scales on the panel’s decision except to say it was based on “all the evidence, all the testimony.”

During jury selection, only a few panelists remembered Spector’s heyday as producer of teen anthems including “To Know Him is to Love Him,” The Ronette’s “Be My Baby,” The Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron” and The Righteous Brothers’ classic, “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’.” Spector also worked on a Beatles album with John Lennon.

Ironically, Clarkson didn’t know Spector’s music legacy either when she met him only hours before she wound up dead at his Alhambra “castle.” The 40-year-old actress had starred in Roger Corman’s 1985 cult film “Barbarian Queen,” but in 2003 she was working as a hostess at the House of Blues nightclub, where she had to be told by a manager that Spector was an important man.

His time had passed. And Clarkson’s career was also ebbing. Their fateful meeting, recounted in both trials, led to her death and the end of his life as he knew it. For the next six years he spent millions on lawyers as he sought to prove that Clarkson killed herself.

But what had happened inside his house was never clear. Clarkson’s body was slumped in a chair in a foyer. A gun had been fired inside her mouth. Spector’s chauffeur, the key witness, said he heard a gunshot, then saw Spector emerge holding a gun and heard him say: “I think I killed somebody.”

Weinberg said forensic evidence proved that Clarkson shot herself and cited her desperation at not being able to get acting work. Jackson said the shooting fit the pattern of other confrontations between Spector and women, and Do said Spector would become “a demonic maniac” when he drank.

Much of the case hinged on the testimony of five women from Spector’s past who said he threatened them with guns when they tried to leave his presence. The parallels with the night Clarkson died were chilling even if the stories were very old — 31 years in one instance.

Weinberg said Spector’s appeal will assert that the judge erred in allowing the women to testify.
