Given the riots in San Francisco surrounding a mall appearance by ‘‘Twilight’’ star Robert Pattinson, the Orland Park Police Department has geared up for the actor’s scheduled appearance early Wednesday evening at Orland Square Mall.

In addition, the mall’s own security force is said to be ‘‘totally ready’’ for the expected hordes of tween and teen girls, who make up the bulk of fans for the Twilight saga of books, penned by Stephanie Meyer.

On Monday, a similar event in San Francisco got crazy when an expected 300-500 attendees swelled to more than 3,000. Things got out of control — during one of many disputes about places in line, one girl was seriously injured and others were trampled, but did not require hospitalization — and Pattinson’s appearance was canceled.

However, a similar appearance in Seattle came off without incident — ‘‘and that’s what we expect here,’’ said a Chicago representative for Summit Entertainment, the studio distributing ‘‘Twilight.’’

Pattinson himself seems reluctant to take up the mantle of celebrity his role as the handsome vampire Edward Cullen is sure to bring, once the film opens Nov. 21. In an interview with the Sun-Times on Sunday in Los Angeles, Pattinson said, ‘‘That whole thing about being a star or being a celebrity makes me uncomfortable. I love acting, but the rest of it can be bit unnerving.

Since he co-starred in a couple of ‘‘Harry Potter’’ films, Pattinson said he looked to Daniel Radcliffe as the role model for dealing with success.

‘‘Daniel’s handled it all so beautifully. And he’s had to deal with far more stuff than I likely ever will.’’

However, that could change if, as predicted, the ‘‘Twilight’’ film spawns another franchise, which Hollywood hopes will be a ‘‘Harry Potter’’ for girls.

Pattinson is scheduled to sign autographs at the Hot Topics store in the Orland Square Mall, beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. That will be followed by a Q&A session in the mall’s main atrium, beginning at 7:30 and expected to last about a half-hour

The soccer star says both he and his wife Victoria find it tough being under constant scrutiny, but adds their three sons - Brooklyn, nine, Romeo, six and three-year-old Cruz - helps put things in perspective.

He said: ‘We have quite a lot of pressure, honestly, as a couple. But we’ve had that since we first started going out, so we’ve got used to it over the years. We have a way of working through it by looking out for each other.

‘Having children around takes all the pressure away. Either of us could have had the worst day at work, but it doesn’t matter because then you come home and see your sons smiling.’

David added being a father is ‘amazing’ and has changed his priorities entirely, but he is determined to give his children normal lives.

He added to Britain’s OK! magazine: ‘You just have to try to be as normal as possible - not just for us but for our children. It’s hard, but they’re the important ones.’

The ‘Spider-Man’ actress checked into Utah’s Cirque Lodge treatment facility - which counts Lindsay Lohan and Eva Mendes among its former patients - in February to be treated for depression, which she claims was brought on by her need to please others.

She said: ‘When you spend your entire life as a child actress, being told where to go and where to stand, you’re performing constantly for people. It definitely breeds the kind of person who’s dependent on other people’s approval.

‘If I’d trusted myself and listened to myself all the times that I ignored myself, I would have been fine. But everyone has to learn their lesson, and now I’ve got it.’

The 26-year-old star, who was treated at the facility for several weeks, is now feeling ‘great’ but is wary of talking about her experience too much.

She explained to America’s Harper’s Bazaar magazine : ‘I’m great. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I give a quote and then it’s blogged about for the rest of my life on the internet.’

The actress also laughed off rumours she is dating Drew Barrymore’s ex-boyfriend Justin Long, claiming she barely even knows him.

She said: ‘Those rumours are the funniest thing on planet Earth. I don’t know him from Adam. I met him once and he and his friend were kind enough to walk me home. I’ve never seen him since.’

Britney Spears, hoping to get her career back on track after a series of public humiliations, will release a new album on her 27th birthday, December 2, her record company said Monday.

“Circus” will be Spears’s sixth studio album, and the first single “Womanizer” will be released on September 22, Jiva/Zomba said in a statement.

The Los Angeles-based singer hit rock bottom in January when she was twice rushed to hospital for treatment in a psychiatric unit.

The drama came after she lost custody of her two young sons last year as her life unraveled in the full glare of a frenzied media.

But Spears has recently amicably ended the custody dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline over the two boys, and earlier this month she enjoyed a triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards where she scooped three of the top honors.

Spears shot to superstardom in late 1998 with her smash-hit debut album “Baby One More Time,” which she followed with another chart-topping success the following year, “Oops! … I Did It Again.”

She remains one of the top selling women artists of the last decade.

Lindsay Lohan’s online missives have come a long way from the days when she offered to “release a politically/morally correct, fully adequite [sic] letter to the press … simply to state my oppinions [sic] on how our society should be educated on for the better of our country.”

Now, with a little help from inamorata Samantha Ronson, she’s penned a surprisingly coherent diatribe on Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, which she says was sparked by her “fear, anxiety, concern, disappointment and stress” and her inability to “bite my tongue any more.”

“Is it a sin to be gay? Should it be a sin to be straight? Or to use birth control? Or to have sex before marriage? Or even to have a child out of wedlock?” the Barack Obama-supporting actress, 22, rails on her MySpace page. “Is our country so divided that the Republicans’ best hope is a narrow-minded, media-obsessed homophobe?”

She goes on to cite an Associated Press story about how Palin’s longtime church in Wasilla, Alaska, promoted a conference “that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through prayer.”

And while Lohan says, “I am not against Sarah Palin as a mother or woman,” she points out that “women have come a long way in the fight to have the choice over what we do with our bodies. … And it’s frightening to see that a woman in 2008 would negate all of that.”

She adds that she “would have liked to have remained impartial; however, I am afraid that the ‘lipstick on a pig’ comments will overshadow the issues. … I have faith that this country will be all that it can be with the proper guidance. I really hope that all of you make your decisions based on the facts and what feels right to you in your heart — vote for Obama!”

Alas, LiLo then undoes much of her earlier eloquence by concluding, “Oh, and … hint hint Pali-pal — don’t pose for anymore tabloid covers, you’re not a celebrity, you’re running for office to represent our, your, my COUNTRY! And in the words of Pamela Anderson, ‘She can suck it.’”

In between educating the public on policy issues and spreading Pam’s deep thoughts on politics, Lindsay has been flashing a sizeable heart-shaped sparkler on her ring finger, which has led simmering betrothal rumors to heat back up.

But her rep insists that the diamond bauble isn’t an engagement ring and wasn’t given to her by Sam, whom she recently gushed to Marie Claire is a “great person.”

“She bought it herself,” the mouthpiece tells People. “It’s an antique ring that she found at an antique store in NYC.”

So, why show off an eye-catching rock that she knows will kick-start speculation about the seriousness of her relationship with Ronson, whom the New York Post says she enjoyed an extended and “intense liplock” session with during a recent night out at New York’s Beatrice Inn?

“It’s like her own personal joke these days,” a snitch tattles to E! News. “She slips a ring on that finger, then goes to a party and watches the rumors start to roll. It amuses her.”

Not amusing to Lindsay? Tripping in front of the paparazzi.

TMZ reports that Lohan stumbled over a barricade set up outside New York’s Bowery Hotel on Sunday night for a birthday bash tossed by Jennifer Lopez for husband Marc Anthony.

Apparently concluding that a shutterbug was responsible for her lack of balance, LiLo “punched” one of them in the nose, all while talking on her phone and carrying a suitcase-sized purse.

After the supposed proboscis swing, she is said to have told the person on the phone, “Oh my God, I just hit a paparazzi.”

Police were reportedly called but no charges filed.

Punchy Lohan Slams Palin as ‘Narrow-Minded Homophobe’

On dog-sitting duty over the past few weeks, Reese Witherspoon was spotted out for a jog with boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal’s German Shepherd in Brentwood earlier this week.

The “Legally Blonde” babe has been taking care of Atticus while Jake stays in Morocco filming his new movie “Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time”.

Meanwhile, Reese recently released a written statement via CNN as part of her Avon global ambassador role, talking about the topic of breast cancer.

She wrote: “I am passionate about fighting this devastating disease. I fight for my mother, myself, my children and future generations of women, so one day we will not have to be afraid of breast cancer. I began my fight by learning important first steps in breast cancer detection, and will not end my fight until every woman can stand together saying we are breast cancer free.”

Witherspoon, 32, adds: “More than anything else, I have faith—faith we will find a cure. I saw this commitment in the faces of the women in Washington—in the faces of the women walking and the women and men who stood on the sidelines encouraging the 3,500 participants to the finish line. I was cheering right along with them, screaming for action to find a cure.”

Continuing the fight against breast cancer, Avon will be holding another big walk taking place in New York City on October 4 and 5.

Reese Witherspoon’s Passionate Fight

Tina Fey is “likely” to play Gov. Sarah Palin on “Saturday Night Live,” said a person close to NBC’s sketch comedy show.

Fey is “likely” to return to her former show Saturday to play the Alaskan governor and Sen. John McCain’s running mate, a person close to the show told The Associated Press on Friday night. The person requested anonymity because the decision has not been announced officially. No further details were available.

Since Palin’s entry onto the national political stage, speculation has been rampant over who might play Palin on the program. Many have commented that Fey resembles her.

In an interview earlier this week with The AP, “SNL” executive producer and creator Lorne Michaels said, “The whole world cast her in that role.”

The final decision went down to the last minute, apparently. “SNL” premieres Saturday evening with Michael Phelps as host and a planned appearance from Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for president.

Fey was a cast member and writer — including a stint as head writer — for “SNL” for nine years before leaving in 2006 to star in “30 Rock,” which is also produced by Michaels. On Tuesday, Michaels said that should Fey play Palin, she was unlikely to remain in the part in the long-term, which depending on the election results, could be for four years or longer.

Fey’s publicist did not immediately return a call requesting comment.
