Rachel Alexandra Wins Woodward Stakes

Rachel Alexandra beat the boys in Saratoga today to become the first female to win the Woodward Stakes thoroughbred horse race. The 3-year-old filly held off Macho Again by a head to win her ninth-straight race.

Rachel Alexandra

Rachel Alexandra really made history today, following up her wins in the Preakness Stakes and the Haskell Invitational to be the first filly to win the Woodward Stakes.

With Calvin Borel onboard, Rachel Alexandra started out from the 3 post against Bullsbay, Macho Again, Da’ Tara and Asiatic Boy. She took the lead on the backstretch, but never really broke free of the pack and at one stage looked like she might be overtaken.

But that’s not the Rachel Alexandra we know. Borel cracks the whip and the wonderfully decided that she wasn’t interested in coming second, holding ofd a late charge from Macho Again.
