Meteor Shower August 2009

August is a time of worship as the Perseid Meteor Shower fills the sky.  On the US West Coast, the prime time for Perseid Meteor Shower watching is August 13 between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.  In the Northern Hemisphere, August is considered meteor month because it is the time of the best displays of the year. The peak is always mid-August during the annual Perseid Meteor Shower.

This meteor shower is particularly well known because so many people are out camping during this period. For many of us, the highlight of the family camping trip was lying on our backs all night watching for "shooting stars" and being well rewarded for our vigilance.

This year's Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to produce an above average number of shooting stars. The bright, last quarter moon will, however, drown out the fainter meteors. Still the night sky on August 11 and 12 should provide a wonderful show for those of us far from city lights and cloudy nights. The best viewing is expected on the night of August 12 (morning of August 13).

May we all recognize the blessings of Nature and realize that the sky is a far better show than anything on a humanly built screen.
